What is a Ministry Center?

With the soon-to-be complete Ministry Center in Xeyejup, Guatemala, I thought this might be a great opportunity to talk about exactly what BE's vision and definition of a Ministry Center is.

A Ministry Center is distinct from a church building because the main focus is not the building or the gathering. The gathering serves one purpose: to go out. Most church buildings have the thrust of getting people in. We desire the opposite.

Why Do We Work With Orphans?

Part of the outreaches that Baptist Evangelism has been involved with since 1998, with Carelink International and in just the last few years working with orphans we have been confronted with questions like, "Why?" "Why meet people on a physical level?" "Why treat the body?" "Why branch out into 'social activism' and help orphans?"

The better question is, Why haven't we sooner? A continuing theme throughout the Bible is that of God being the champion of the undeserving, the unable, the "underdog". God was never ashamed to call Himself the champion of the weak, the helper of the helpless, or the Father to the fatherless. So why, as His representation on earth, should we do anything less?

This isn't social activism

This isn't a social gospel program. This isn't even some "gimmick" to give people the Gospel. This is just God honoring. This is the effectual working out of the love of God shed abroad in our hearts, moving us into a Christ compelled mission of touching people's lives and demonstrating the salvation of man.

Perhaps one of the most oft quoted passages in the work of orphans or the underprivileged would be James 1.27,

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, to keep himself unspotted from the world."

Where is James coming from in writing this? Where does this definition of pure religion come from? This all stems from the outflow, the outward appearance of faith. We help others because we have been helped. The work that Baptist Evangelism is doing in providing humanitarian aid and caring for the fatherless is action prompted by transformation. It is also demonstrative of the work that has been done. Again, we help because we have been helped. God became Father to every single believer when we were made joint heirs with the Son. We, though destitute and sinking ever further into the mire of our own iniquitous pit, were raised up by the strong arm of the Lord and made to sit with Him in heavenly places. This imagery is acted out in the care of orphans. They are destitute and hopeless by themselves. But, not by any merit of their own, they are raised up in strong arms of Christians who are giving themselves to provide for the weak.

This is not an article written solely to address the purposes of the ministries of Baptist Evangelism, but also a call to arms for others to join us. If you have been changed change other's lives. If you have been touched by the hand of the Lord, touch others. We have been given much and much will be required of us. Are we exercising a pure religion? Are we being Christ-like and giving ourselves for the wretched and the poor? These are the marks of Christian. Are they found in your life?

Networking

net·work·ing
   [net-wur-king]
             –noun
1.    a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest

The above is taken from Dictionary.com's definition of "Networking". The term has only been in popular usage in the last fifty or sixty years to describe the interaction of people that share a "common interest".

Baptist Evangelism has been on the web for several years now and has been using social networks for most of those years. Part of the reason for this is to provide services and "connectivity" for those with a common passion for reaching the world with the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ.

B.E. is establishing a strategy to be more effective in social networking. This strategy is a means of connecting more people with the ministries of B.E. and how anybody and everybody's skills can be used in the furtherance of the Gospel. Below are some of the ways you can be connected with B.E. and stay informed. We're constantly adding resources and updates on this site as well as on individual blogs. So be sure you stay connected with Baptist Evangelism so we can provide you with what you need to reach the world.

May Update

I wish that you could be with us to see what God is doing in our ministry.  I am so thankful for your faithful prayers and the support and offerings that many have given to help us during these past couple of months.  Right now as I write this letter 18 Haitian men are in our ministry center for classes.  They will be in classes from 8 a.m. in the morning until 8 p.m. at night.  Over the next 8 days they will receive over 60 hours of teaching from our visiting US professors.  There is certainly an air of excitement around the Mourning to Morning Ministry Center.  Later this month we have 33 more Haitian men registered for the Chronological Bible Teaching course that Missionary Jerry Smyth and others will be teaching.  In fact we have training plans scheduled right through the summer!  Pray as we train those leaders for our churches and ministries.

This past Sunday I preached for the new Baptist church plant we launched last month in Croix des Bouquet.  I saw 41 present for the Sunday School hour and 75 for the preaching service!  God is certainly blessing this work!  We are preparing in several other areas where we are ready with other new church plants.

Last Wednesday other pastors and I spoke at length about plans for expanding and enhancing our work with the orphans in Haiti.  We have located another building and we already have an overflowing list of children who need to be cared for.  Together with pastors Riccardo, Maurange, Demaus and others we are trying to develop better ways to care for, educate and feed the many children who are at risk and in need.  Please pray for us and help us with the great need if you can.

On May 15th I will be traveling to Guatemala with Roger Gamble, a retired builder from Cinncinatti.  With the offerings that we have in hand we hope to finish the dormitory part of our Xejuyup Ministry Center.  This will be a real blessing and prepare the way for other groups that we have scheduled to travel to Guatemala this summer to work on the center.  We are looking forward to be with Pastor Salomon and our two missions there in Xeyuyup and Panacanal Dos and helping Brother Edmundo in Tzisbaj.

Iglesia Bautista Faro de Luz here in Jupiter continues to be blessed.  Pastor Jorge stays busy with the preaching and teaching in our regular services.  We are also working with several young men in training classes to help them prepare for ministry.  We are praying about where the Lord would lead us to open our next mission.

Carelink International, our servant ministry arm is also growing.  Each week we see more and more patients.  We are blessed with a tremendous team of volunteers who help our doctors work with the needy.  Pray for the finances that are needed to keep the doors of this important ministry open.

Finally brethren, pray for us!

Sincerely yours,
Ron Maggard

Mourning to Morning Guesthouse

The theme that we've adopted for the ministry in Haiti is "Mourning to Morning". In wake of the devastating earthquake we realized so much of the Gospel is about bringing people from mourning to morning.

In a social aspect this means bringing the physically, mentally, and socially hurting (mourning - grief) to a place where they can see the Bright and Morning Star of God. We believe the Scripture when it says that "joy comes in the morning."

This joy, however, is by no means restricted or limited to physical joy or a relief of physical mourning. At the center of bringing physical relief is the relief of spiritual mourning that Christ brings. When we're dead in our trespasses and sins, separated from God, we have no joy. We have no peace. We have nothing but mourning. But when Christ, the Son, comes we behold His glory and we are set free. We, through Christ, are brought from mourning to morning.

As part of these works we've acquired a building in Port Au Prince where we can host groups to come to Haiti. This aspect of the M2M Ministry Center is known as the Mourning to Morning Guesthouse.
